IB Diploma Program

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a comprehensive, rigorous program of advanced studies that demands the best from motivated students.  IB students study a broad spectrum of subjects and engage in research (Extended Essay) and experiential learning through school, community, and international activities. In the forty years since its founding, the IB Diploma has become a symbol of academic integrity and intellectual promise, recognized by leading universities in the U.S. and throughout the world.

Marietta High School’s IB Diploma Programme, authorized since 1995, aims to provide a balanced education, facilitate geographic mobility, and promote international understanding through a shared academic experience.  All our IB Diploma subjects are taught over a two-year period across a wide range of disciplines leading to international examinations for students in grades 11 & 12. Our IB exam results compare favorably to those of other IB World Schools, and our students are widely accepted at competitive universities across America and abroad.

Our Application Process
Students must first be accepted to the MHS Pre-Diploma program in grades 9 and 10 to gain the academic background needed to enter the IB Diploma Programme.   Students are screened at two different levels for participation in the Marietta High School IB Programme: the MHS Pre-Diploma program screening in January of the eighth grade year, and for students on track to earn the IB Middle Years Certificate in tenth grade, a second IB screening for the IB Diploma Programme in the spring of the sophomore year.  We encourage you to attend one of our program orientation sessions offered each November and December at the high school for a detailed explanation of the program and an opportunity to ask questions.  2012 Orientation Sessions: November 29 at 7:00 pm & December 3 at 7:00 pm (MHS Seminar Room)
Applications and more details are available in
Important Resources (below.)

If you are considering transferring to our IB Programme from another IB World School, please contact Mrs. Debbie Woolard at
DWoolard@marietta-city.k12.ga.us

IB College Credit at Georgia public colleges
In an effort to further encourage students to earn the IB Diploma, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia awards up to 24 hours of college credit for the IB Diploma. For a full description, see section 4.2.1.6 of the Board of Regent’s policy manual.  IB students also earn extra quality points for IB courses in their HOPE scholarship GPA calculation.
IBackers is the MHS IB parent support group for the MHS IB Diploma and Pre-Diploma programmes. Your $20 per family membership provides rewards and incentives for IB students throughout the four years of the program. If you’d like to join IBackers to support the students in the IB Programs, please complete the IBackers form located in the Resource section of this webpage.  Choice of an IB bumper sticker or tote bag is given with IBackers membership.  Additional stickers or tote bags may be purchased for $5.00 each.  IBacker Registration Form

MHS to offer IB Career-related Certificate beginning Fall 2013

On April 19, 2013, the International Baccalaureate Organization officially authorized Marietta High School to offer the IB Career-related Certificate. IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education—that we believe is important for our students.   Like the IB Diploma, the IBCC is an 11th/12th grade program of study, a quality career education program with IB support.  The IBCC pairs the school's industry-certified career pathways with two or more IB DP courses as well as an IB Core specific to the IBCC.  The first cohort of 11th grade IBCC candidates begin the program fall 2013.

9th grade trip to Washington, D.C.
One of the many memorable moments for our 9th graders during their trip to our nation's capital was a request from a young Japanese man, whose home had been destroyed in the earthquake/tsunami, to take part in a "Gambare" (good luck) video he was creating for his countrymen.  He caught us on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial where we had gathered to share student "I Have a Dream" speeches.  View the video.
